Design for Sale – VIA OpenBook Ultra-Mobile Laptop Reference Design

VIA Technologies has unveiled the VIA OpenBook Ultra-Mobile Laptop Reference Design, and with it, 3G and WiMAX wireless customization, and a new ultra-mobile processor platform to bring a new look, global connectivity and improved performance to the ultra-mobile laptop market. Following in the wave of super-small laptops, the OpenBook ultra-mobile laptop boasts an 8.9-inch display with 1,024 by 600 resolution. Based on a new VIA VX800 chipset and C7-M ULV processor, the OpenBook ultra-mobile laptop accommodates 2GB RAM and a 2.5-inch HDD, and comes with WiMAX, HSDPA and EV-DA, three USB 2.0 ports, VGA out, a 4-in-1 card reader and front and back 2-megapixel webcams. The CAD files for the OpenBook ultra-mobile laptop reference design are downloadable under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 license, giving OEMs, system integrators and broadband service providers the ability to tailor the laptop to specifically meet their target market. Says Jon Phillips, Business and Community Manager for Creative Commons, "Making the actual raw CAD files available under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license is a brilliant first step that clearly and legally allows others to emergently build upon VIA's open innovation." While the price and specs of these laptops will vary from one manufacturer to another, you can expect to pay around $600. VIA.
